William J. Rivers papers, 1771-1970.

Papers, 1881-1970 and microfilm, 1866-1901, relating to literary and historical topics, antebellum authors and social life in Charleston and Columbia, S.C.; accounts of his first ride on a train and other memorable experiences; and family genealogical information. Collection consisting of a history of South Carolina written for his young grandson in Richland County, S.C., and correspondence with colleagues and relatives. Correspondence; historical narratives; typed copy of his reminiscences, 1892, written in the form of a letter to his grandson; "Anecdotes... about our literary men" (1901); scrapbooks containing miscellaneous pictures and clippings, chiefly of literary and historical significance; printed poems; other papers; and newspaper clippings (mfm) on various subjects. Correspondence and writings, including "Bits of History for a Boy," [1893], in three parts, written "For my grandson WJR Jr. of Eastover, S.C. & his young friends & acquaintances...." Manuscript arranged in three parts: Indians in South Carolina, About the Pirates on the Carolina Coast, and Some Other Troubles in Colonial Times; Rivers discusses this work in letter, 24 Jan. 1895, to [Edward] McCrady, author and lawyer of Charleston, S.C. Other items include letter, 20 Nov. 1881, written by Rivers from Chestertown, Maryland., where he served as president of Washington College, to his daughter Emma, concerning her literary aspirations; and letter, 19 July 1891, expressing Rivers' opinion of titles of respect, "I only call myself Wm J. Rivers.... All titles are pretty much a matter of moonshine. Only 'consequential' people put any value upon them." Literary drafts of "Eunice: A Tale of Reconstruction Times in South Carolina," a romance novel, includes essay discussing Reconstruction, and a few newspaper clippings related to the Ku Klux Klan; and "Millimenta or Two Years in Boetia"; and "Harbor Cove or A Sequel to the Narrative of A Real Robinson Crusoe" (both stored offsite at Annex; advance notice required). Collection of newspaper clippings, ca. 79 items (on microfilm R.226), circa 1866-1901.

McCrady, Edward, 1833-1903

Charleston, South Carolina attorney, civic leader, and vestryman of St. Philips (Episcopal) Church. Born in 1802, McCrady was raised under the care of his grandfather William Johnson and was sent to Yale College at the age of fifteen, graduating in 1820. McCrady served as the U.S. District Attorney in South Carolina from 1839 to 1850, and as a state legislator. In 1829 he married Louisa Rebecca Lane. Edward McCrady died in 1892.
